3 Tips on How to be a Mindful Consumer in 2026
What does it mean to be a mindful consumer? To be “mindful” means to be more present and thoughtful about the current moment.
Here are a few tips on how you can be more mindful about your capitalist consumption, and hopefully live a more generative life.
(With these 3 tips, I’m not saying to stop them entirely. Being absolutist about anything is always a bad idea. I’m just encouraging you to be thoughtful about them. To be more present about them.)
Don’t make scrolling social media your hobby.
Social media (TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, etc…) are giant ad machines. These networks have been so vigorously refined to be perfect selling machines over the years it’s honestly scary. They are intentionally designed to be addicting to use, and also to exploit your interests and emotional state to sell you products. Feeling bored? Buy something. Long day at work? Buy something. Interpersonal relationships straining you? Buy something. And the real kicker is that even if you don’t buy something, you’ve made the tech oligarchs money anyway. Because every time you scroll, like, share, laugh, look, etc… You make the network more money from just using the product itself.
In 2026 social networks are basically like a casino. It doesn’t matter where you’re sitting, the house has already won.
2. Don’t use a delivery service for groceries.
Grocery delivery services like Uber Eats, DoorDash, Amazon, etc… The goal of these companies is for grocery stores to go away entirely. The perfect future for these billion dollar corporations is for grocery stores to not exist at all, so everyone will be forced to use their delivery services.
Another reason not to use these services is that often times, they actually mark up the food when people buy through the delivery app. (So they make more money on the same products.) Go to your local grocery store in person, walk around, talk to employees, it’s actually fun and community building.
3. Wait 24 hours before making a purchase for an online product.
Odds are, they aren’t going to sell out of it. Waiting 24 hours before purchasing will create time and distance between you and the product, which will then help to inform you if you really wanted that product, or if you only wanted that product in the moment that you found it.
There you have it! 3 tips for being a better more mindful consumer in 2026. I hope you can apply them to your own life, and begin to see positive outcomes.
Until next time,
